Unlike native paper wasps, European wasps (Vespula germanica) are aggressive, can sting repeatedly, and are attracted to sugary drinks and pet food — a real risk around outdoor entertaining and children’s play areas.

How we treat

European wasp nests are treated at dusk with a dust formulation (usually permethrin or deltamethrin) injected directly into the nest entrance. Returning workers carry the dust deep into the nest and it kills the colony within 24 hours. Paper wasp nests are treated by direct spray from a safe distance, then physically removed once activity ceases.

What NOT to do

• Don’t try to burn a wasp nest — this rarely kills the colony and often causes fire damage
• Don’t spray a wasp nest at midday — workers are active and defensive
• Don’t block a nest entry — this drives wasps into the wall cavity and often into the living space
