From late September through to early December, we get a flood of calls from Campbelltown and Macarthur homeowners who’ve just seen a cloud of winged termites outside — or worse, inside — their home. Swarming season is one of the clearest signs a mature colony is nearby.

Why termites swarm

Once a subterranean colony reaches maturity (usually 3–5 years old), it produces winged reproductives called alates. On warm, humid evenings — most often after rainfall — the alates leave the parent nest in a mating flight. Each pair that survives will attempt to start a new colony, often within 100 metres of the parent.

What a swarm means for your home

• Alates seen outside — usually near street lights or on windows — mean a mature colony is within a few hundred metres of your property
• Alates seen inside — even a small number — almost always means the colony is already established in or under the structure
• Discarded wings on window sills, in cobwebs or on the floor are a classic post-swarm sign

What to do right now

• Do not spray them with fly spray — you’ll scatter the workers deeper into wall cavities
• Collect a few in a jar or take a clear close-up photo for the inspector
• Turn off external lights that are attracting them
• Book an urgent AS 3660.2 timber pest inspection — same-day where possible

Suburbs we see the most swarming activity in

Bushland-fringe suburbs such as Kentlyn, Wedderburn, St Helens Park, Airds and Rosemeadow consistently produce the most swarm-related callouts, but we also see heavy activity in older brick-veneer streets across Campbelltown, Leumeah, Minto and Ingleburn where original 1970s–90s termite barriers have long since expired.
